In some cases, you might need to use a backup PIN, pattern or password instead of a fingerprint. A few examples of when this is required:

  • You restart (reboot) your tablet.
  • You switch to a different user.
  • Your tablet has been idle for a while since you last unlocked it with your fingerprint.

I can't set up a new fingerprint

If you can't add a new fingerprint, clean the power button gently with an alcohol wipe or a soft, dry lint-free cloth, then try again.

If that doesn't work, make sure that your tablet's software is updated and try again with a different finger. Learn how to check and update your Android version.

My Pixel Tablet's power button is unresponsive

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Security and privacy and then Device unlock and then Fingerprint Unlock.
  3. Turn Touch to unlock at any time on or off.
  • When 'Touch to unlock at any time' is off, you can unlock your tablet if you press the power button with an enrolled fingerprint when the screen is off, or touch the power button with an enrolled fingerprint when the screen is on. This setting prevents unintentional touches.
