Change an ebook's font size, color, & more

You can change the display color for most ebooks. For some ebooks, you can also change the font size, color, and line spacing.

Make the font bigger

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Depending on the book:
    • Tap the top of the screen. Then, tap Display options Display options and then Text and then Increase font size increase font size.
    • Pinch open to zoom in.

Tip: If your view is set to Original pages, you can keep the same font size later. Turn on “Remember zoom” in the Display options.

Change the font style, alignment, & spacing

Tip: Not all books offer these options.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Tap the top of the screen and then Display options Display options and then Text.
  4. Change a setting:
    • Font style:  Tap a typeface.
    • Line spacing: Tap Increase line space increase line space or Decrease line space decrease line space
    • Text alignment : Tap Default, Left, or Justify.

Change the page layout

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Tap the top of the screen and then Display options Display options and then Text.
  4. Under “Page layout,” select your preferred format.
    • Auto: Depending on your device’s orientation and screen size, the layout is automatically set.
    • 1 page: Display one page at a time.
    • 2 page: Display 2 pages at a time.

Tip: Not all books offer more than one page layout.

Change the color & brightness

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Tap the top of the screen and then Display options Display options and then Lighting.
  4. Change the color or brightness:
    • To make the screen brighter, drag the brightness scale.
    • To change the color scheme, tap Light, Sepia, or Dark.

Tip: If you change your phone’s theme, it changes the color in Play Books. For example, if you change your phone’s setting to Dark theme, the Play Books app will also use a dark color scheme.

Make it easier to read at night

As the sun sets, Night Light gradually filters the blue light from your screen. Blue light is replaced with a warm amber light. Turn it on once, and Night Light will always adjust to the perfect setting.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Tap the top of the screen And then Display options Display options And then Lighting.
  4. Turn on Reading Night Light.

Tip: You can also turn on Night Light from your phone’s settings. If you use Night Light for your phone, the Play Books app will also use the reading Night Light.

Show your reading progress

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. To show your reading stats, tap anywhere on the page.
    • To hide your stats, tap 2 more times.
    • To select a page number, tap on the top half of the page, and use the slider that appears below.

Quickly flip between pages

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Play Books app Play Books .
  2. Open the book.
  3. Tap the center of the page.
  4. To flip through the pages: 
    • Swipe left or right.
    • Use the slide bar at the bottom of the screen.
  5. To go back to the start page, on the progress bar, tap the page thumbnail.
