Turn Google Chat notifications on or off

Notifications appear on the devices that you used most recently. If you're not active in Chat, notifications appear on all devices that are signed in to your Google Account.

You automatically receive notifications when you create or respond to a message or if someone @mentions you.

If you mute a specific conversation or set your Chat status to 'Do Not Disturb', you won't receive notifications.

Turn on notifications

Turn on notifications in the Google Chat app

  1. Open the Chat app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu  and then Settings .
  3. Under 'Notifications', turn 'Mobile notifications' on.

Tip: If you don't get notifications, make sure that 'Do not disturb' is off and notifications in your mobile device settings are on.

  1. Open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings .
  3. Select your account.
  4. Under 'Notifications', tick the box next to 'Chat notifications'.

Tip: If you don't get notifications, make sure that 'Do not disturb' is off and notifications in your mobile device settings are on.

  1. Open the Chat app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu  and then Settings .
  3. Under 'Notifications', turn 'Mobile notifications' off.

  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings .
  3. Select your account.
  4. Under 'Notifications', untick the box next to 'Chat notifications'.

Customise Google Chat notifications for spaces and direct messages

Customise notifications for a space by topic or mentions
  1. Open the Chat app or Gmail app .
  2. Select the Spaces tab at the bottom.
  3. At the bottom, tap Chat or Spaces .
  4. To open a conversation, tap the name of the space or the group direct message.
  5. At the top, tap the space or group name and then Notifications.
  6. Select an option:
    • All: Get push notifications and a notification dot for all new messages.
    • For you: Get push notifications and a notification dot when you're @mentioned, or if someone in the conversation uses '@all'.
    • None: You don't get any push notifications, but @mentions and @all continue to get a notification dot.
    • Mute conversation: Muted conversations are italicised and are shown at the bottom of your conversation list. They aren't shown in Home.
Tip: Even if you turn off notifications, you'll still get a red notification dot for @mentions and direct messages. 
Customise notifications for a space with in-line threading

By default, only threads that you follow are bolded and moved to the top of your conversation list. To control how thread updates show in Chat, customise your notification settings.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app or Gmail app .
    • In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat .
  2. Select the Spaces tab at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap and hold a space and then Notification settings.
  4. Select an option for notifications:
    • All: Notifications for all new messages and replies in threads.
      • Tip: If you select 'All', it automatically follows all new threads for that space. To unfollow a thread, tap Active threads and then Following.
    • Main conversations: Notifications for all new main conversations, @mentions and replies in threads that you follow.
    • For you: Notifications for @mentions and replies in threads that you follow.
    • None: No notifications, just an indicator for @mentions.
  5. Optional: To prevent the conversation from being bolded and moved to the top of your conversation list, select the box next to 'Mute conversation'.

Tip: When you follow a thread in a space, you're notified with a blue dot whenever there's activity in that thread, unless that space is muted.

Turn notifications on or off for a specific direct message
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app .
  2. Tap and hold a direct message.
  3. Tap Notification settings.
  4. Select All or None.
  5. Optional: To prevent the conversation from being bolded and moved to the top of your conversation list, select the box next to 'Mute conversation'.
Customise notification sounds in Google Chat
  1. Open the Chat app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings .
  3. Under 'Notifications', tap Notification sound.
  4. To update the notification sound or its volume, in the window that displays, tap Sound or See more for additional settings which include:
    • Toggle to allow notifications
    • Toggle to show notifications as pop-up
    • Toggle to vibrate
    • Options for lock screen
    • Toggle for app icon badges

Tip: To turn off notification sounds, select None.

Customise Google Chat notification sounds in Gmail
  1. Open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings .
  3. Tap General settings and then Manage notifications and then Chat and spaces and then Sound.
  4. On the 'Sound' screen, pick the notification sound that you want to use.
  5. On some Android phones, to save your notification sound, tap Save at the top right.
Stop duplicate chat notifications

You may get extra chat notifications if you have multiple apps like Gmail and Google Chat on your mobile device. To avoid duplicate notifications, you can turn off notifications for the Chat app.

Important: Settings can vary by manufacturer. For more info, contact your device manufacturer.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications and then App settings and then Chat.
    • If you don't see 'Chat', you may need to update the list to show all apps. To update the list, at the top, tap the drop-down menu and then All apps.
  3. Turn All Chat notifications off.

Troubleshoot issues with Google Chat notifications

Prevent multiple notifications

To avoid duplicate mobile notifications from the Gmail and Chat apps, in your device’s settings, turn off Google Chat app notifications.

  1. On your device, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications and then App settings and then Chat.
    • If you don't find 'Chat', update the list to show all apps:
      • At the top, tap the Down arrow and then All apps.
  3. Turn 'All Chat notifications' off.
