Check & understand your Pixel’s temperature

Your Pixel phone is designed to operate at a range of temperatures, and may sometimes feel warm. You can check your phone's current temperature and get info about how to manage the temperature.

Check your device temperature

Important: Available on Pixel 6a and later.

  1. On your Pixel phone, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery and then Battery diagnostics and then Phone is very warm.

Learn about your device’s temperature state

Device temperature diagnostics shows the current estimated device temperature and one of four temperature states of your device:

  • Cold
  • Normal
  • Warm
  • Elevated

Pixel devices are designed to operate at device temperatures above ambient temperature due to heat generated by internal components such as the processor, cameras and radio antennas. Pixel devices meet international safety and regulatory standards for device temperature, but prolonged time at elevated temperatures may impact device performance and user comfort.

Cold
The cold temperature state indicates that your estimated device temperature is lower than normal. Your phone may be cold if it was exposed to cold outside temperatures or close to an air conditioner vent. If your phone’s temperature is below 0°C / 32°F, it may shut down suddenly.

Tip: Make sure to let your phone warm up gradually.
Normal
The normal temperature state indicates that your estimated device temperature is typical with normal phone use.
Warm
The warm temperature state indicates that your estimated device temperature is slightly warm but operating as expected during use. To prevent further temperature increases, settings like screen brightness and network speeds may be reduced.
Elevated
The elevated temperature state indicates that your estimated device temperature is higher than normal. Activities such as playing videos, games, or other media, transferring or restoring backed-up data, recording high-definition videos, tethering your phone or using it as a hotspot, downloading or uploading large amounts of data, setting up your phone, restoring it from backup, or doing any of these while charging or in high outside temperatures can cause your phone’s temperature to be elevated.

In this state, your phone will try to cool down by temporarily limiting performance and pausing certain features. If your phone exceeds device temperature thresholds, it'll automatically turn off to cool down and keep you and your device safe.
What information is shared with Google

If you turn on usage and diagnostics, your device sends info to Google about what’s working and not working. For example, your device can send info like:

  • Battery level
  • How often you use your apps
  • Quality and length of your network connections (like mobile, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth)

If you share Battery diagnostics, your device can send info like:

  • Your account information
  • Your phone’s IMEI number
  • The model name of your phone, such as Pixel 9 or Pixel 9 Pro
  • Your session ID number
  • Information about certain settings such as Adaptive brightness, Smooth Display, and Dark theme
  • Thermal diagnostic signals such as the device’s current temperature state and temperature history

Keep your phone from feeling too warm

Each of the four states provides contextual recommendations based on your device temperature and settings. Learn more about how to keep your Pixel phone from feeling too warm or hot.
