Set up your Google tag in Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a platform that collects data from your websites and apps to create reports that provide insights into your business.

Below are instructions on how to manually add your Google tag in Google Analytics. If you’re using a website builder or CMS like Wordpress, Shopify, or Wix, learn how to Install your Google tag with a website builder or CMS.

Note: If you use both Google Ads and Google Analytics, you'll only need to set up your Google tag in one platform. You can add the other product as a destination when you configure your Google tag settings.

You must have access to your website code and Google Analytics property.

How to find your Google tag ID and use it for website tracking

For subtitles in your language, turn on YouTube captions. Select the settings icon Image of YouTube settings icon at the bottom of the video player, then select "Subtitles/CC" and choose your language.


  1. Go to Google Analytics.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. In Admin, under Data collection and modification, select Data Streams.
    • Note: The previous link opens to the last Analytics property you accessed. You can change the property using the property selector. You must be an Editor or above at the property level to open your Google tag settings.
  4. Select the data stream that you want to edit.
  5. Under Google tag, click Configure tag settings.
  6. Under Your Google tag, click the Google tag.
  7. Under Tag details, copy the Google tag ID.

Steps to set up your Google tag in Google Analytics

  1. Sign in to your Google Analytics account.
  2. In Admin, under Data collection and modification, select Data Streams.
    • Note: The previous link opens to the last Analytics property you accessed. You must be signed in to a Google Account to open the property. You can change the property using the property selector. You must be an Editor or above at the account level to edit a data stream.
  3. Select the data stream that you want to edit.
  4. Under Google tag
  5. Navigate to the Google tag tab and select Configure tag settings.
  6. Under the Configuration tab, click Installation instructions in the Your Google tag section.
  7. Click Install manually to install the Google tag with gtag.js in your website code.
  8. Next to the code snippet, click Copy to copy the code to your clipboard.
  9. Paste the entire tag snippet in the code of every page of your website, immediately after the <head> element. Don’t add more than one Google tag to each page.
  10. In the Test your website section, enter your website URL and click Test.

Next steps

It may take up to 30 minutes for data collection to start. After data collection has started, verify your Google tag.
