Find answers for issues with digital car key setup and installation.
Set a screen lockTo set up and use a digital car key, you must have a screen lock on your phone. Learn how to set a screen lock on your Android device.
If you receive an error message for a “Wrong activation code,” enter the code again. If you receive an error message for an “Invalid email link,” pair your phone to your car again with a different method.
Pairing errors
Connectivity issuesIf you get a “No connection” error when you try to pair, reconnect to the internet and place your phone on the key reader. Then, wait for your phone and car to pair.
You get an error if you try to sign in with your Workspace Account. To use your digital car key, sign in with your Google Account.
You can’t set up your key without your Google Account. If your account is removed from your device after your digital car key is set up, your digital key is deleted.
If your phone isn’t compatible with your car, you receive an error notification.
If your car isn’t compatible with your device, you receive an error notification.
If you receive an error message that Find my Device is off, from the error message box, tap Turn on. Or, on your phone, turn on Find my Device.
The character limit for a digital car key name is 30. If the name you entered is too long, you receive an error message to change it.
If you get a “Can’t pair” error, your device may have moved or timed out. Try again and place your phone on the key reader. Don’t move your device until pairing is complete. If you still get an error message, check the screen on your car or the digital car key app for more info.
Download errors
No internet connection or storage spaceIf you can't download or install the digital car key app, make sure your phone is connected to the internet and that you have enough storage space to install new apps.
If you get the “Region isn’t supported” error, the feature isn’t available in your region.
If you get the “Phone isn’t supported” error, the feature isn’t available on your device.
If your Google Play service is out of date, you receive an error message to update it. Learn how to get Google Play system updates.
If you get a “Something went wrong” error when you try to install the app, try again in a few minutes.
To use your digital car key, NFC must be turned on. To turn on NFC:
- On your phone, open the Settings app.
- Search for
NFC
. - Turn on Use NFC.
Other errors
Your digital car key may be affected by certain types of cards placed between the phone and key reader in a phone case. This can affect:
- Pairing
- Vehicle lock or unlock
- Engine start
