After you successfully migrate all of your phases, you’re almost ready to go live in your new Google Workspace account. Before you complete your migration to Google Workspace, you need to migrate any recently added or modified content. You can transfer the new content by running a delta migration.
What's a delta migration?
A delta migration is run after the main migration, just before you’re ready to transition to Google Workspace. It identifies new or modified content and migrates the content to the target account.
Running a delta migration on an existing bridge is more efficient than creating a new bridge. A new bridge can create a significant load on target APIs and might result in a slower migration.
A delta migration is different from retrying failures. If you retry failures, Google Workspace Migrate makes a new attempt to migrate items that didn’t migrate on a previous run but it doesn’t check for updates to the source data. Delta migrations include a step to retry failed transactions, so if you run a delta, you don’t need to also retry failures.
For details, go to Retry failed transactions.
What content is migrated in a delta?
A delta migration identifies and migrates any new or modified content and skips over objects that are already migrated. A delta migration doesn’t sync deletions to the target account. For example, if you run a migration and then delete a file on the source account, the file is not deleted on the target account after a delta migration.
How content migrated from Google Drive appears after a delta migration depends on the type of data you're migrating:
- Non-Google content (.docx, .pdf, and so on)—A delta migration identifies updated content and creates a new version of the file on the target account. For example, an update to a Microsoft Office file is migrated as a new version in the target Drive file.
- Google content (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and so on)—Versions are not supported. A delta migration identifies updated source content, deletes the existing content in the target account, and creates a new target file with a new file ID.
Run a delta bridge
Make sure you use the same bridge for migrating data.
- In the Google Workspace Migrate platform, click Bridges. You might have to click Menu first.
- On a bridge that you have already run or partially run, click Run Run delta.
