Create & manage an identity mapping

Use an identity mapping to transfer identities (such as users, calendar resources, and groups) on your source domain to identities on your Google Workspace domain. An identity mapping ensures that user and group permissions in the source environment are transferred to your Google Workspace domain, including:

  • Sharing rights assigned to users and groups
  • The metadata that shows file creation and changes
  • Other references that include a username

Step 1: Create a CSV file to add multiple entries

Create the CSV file using the following format:

  • In the first column, enter the identity with the syntax as it appears in the source environment. For groups, enter the group name.
  • In the second column, enter the target domain identity. For groups, enter the group's email address in Google Workspace.
  • Make sure the character encoding of the CSV file is set to UTF-8.

Tips for a successful identity mapping

  • Include all identities in the identity mapping, even if you don’t plan on migrating all data at once. Identities might be referenced in non-user specific data, such as calendar events or sharing permissions.
  • Don't map a source identity to more than one target identity. Doing so can cause issues, such as breaking calendar events.
  • To migrate organization-wide sharing permissions to Google Workspace, include a Default entry in the identity mapping. See the following example.
  • If you're migrating calendar events and an event organizer is external to your organization, map the organizer in the identity mapping. To do so, add the user's email address to both the first and second column.
  • View your settings template for additional options for identity mappings.
