When you have headphones connected to your Android devices, Google Assistant can announce incoming notifications which includes:
- Messages
- Emails
- Calendar events
- Info from other applicable installed apps
Tip: After Google Assistant reads the notifications to you, you can respond by voice to a message when Google Assistant is finished speaking.
Turn Notification Announcements on or off
- On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
- Under Assistant setting, tap Notification Announcement

- Under “Customize Notifications,” choose which app notifications you want announced.
Temporarily pause notification announcements
- On your phone or tablet, if you want to pause notification announcements, you can turn on Do Not Disturb.
- If Do Not Disturb is turned off and you still can’t hear notification announcements, check that your media volume is turned up.
Tip: If your screen is unlocked, incoming notifications won't be announced.
Ask to hear unread notifications
On your phone, you can also check what unread notifications you have.
On your headphones, activate Google Assistant and say “Read my notifications.”
Tip: If you use third-party Assistant-enabled headphones, you can also press Assistant, and let go without asking anything. Google Assistant gets your unread notifications and reads them to you.
How notifications & Google Assistant language settings work
On your phone, if you have different languages set up, Google Assistant reads your notifications in the language that the message was received in.
Tip: To have a better Google Assistant experience, make sure you have the same language set for your Google Assistant and your phone’s system display.
