Cast from the YouTube app and YouTube.com

You can cast videos from YouTube to your Chromecast device. Any device connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast can cast.

Cast YouTube

  1. Make sure your mobile device or computer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast.
  2. Open the YouTube app or YouTube.com.
  3. Tap Cast Inactive cast extension
  4. Tap the Chromecast device you want to cast to and then Play. The content should play on the TV where your Chromecast is connected.

To stop the cast session, tap Cast Inactive cast extension and then Disconnect. If you want to continue the video on your mobile device, tap Cast Inactive cast extension  and then select your mobile device from the list of available devices.

YouTube

You can continue to use your mobile device to perform other tasks while your video plays on your Chromecast. To play, pause or navigate with the scrollbar, use your device as you normally would to control playback.

Note: If you get an error when you sign in to YouTube, try the troubleshooting steps in Sign in to the YouTube app on your smart TV or game console. If your device is an older Chromecast model (Chromecast (2nd and 3rd gen), Chromecast Ultra or TV that works with Google Cast), use your mobile device to control YouTube playback.

Play multiple videos back-to-back

While a video plays on your Chromecast, select Add to TV queue on your mobile device or computer to add more videos to your TV queue.

To check your TV queue, open the YouTube app or YouTube.com on your mobile device and find the TV queue on the screen. You might need to go back to the YouTube homepage to find the TV queue.

Any device that’s connected to your Wi-Fi network can cast videos and add to the TV queue.

Note:

  • Some videos might not play on Chromecast. Videos not approved for mobile playback might not work with Chromecast.
  • Because YouTube uses adaptive bitrate streaming, videos might appear at a lower quality at first, then switch to the highest possible quality after a few seconds. If the video doesn’t buffer at playback speed, the video downgrades to a lower quality setting, which allows for smoother playback.
  • Casting from YouTube is supported from the YouTube app, YouTube Music app, YouTube.com, and most embedded YouTube videos.

If you have trouble with your Chromecast, try to troubleshoot an issue.
