Use a template & add a background in Google Vids (Workspace Labs)

Important: This article refers to Google Workspace Labs, which is an invite only program for users to try new AI Features. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs features, open Google Vids. You can create and use templates like meeting recaps, project updates, help center tutorials, and more to easily get started with creating a video.

Create a new video with a template

You can create a new video from a template.

  1. On your computer, open Google Vids.
  2. Click Templates .
  3. Click on a template in the template gallery to preview:
    • To add all scenes from the template to your video, click Insert all scenes.
    • To add the current scene from the template to your video, click Insert current scene.
    • Click Back to return to the template gallery.

Add a template to a video

You can add a template to an existing video and choose to:

  • Apply all scenes from the template
  • Add scenes individually
  1. On your computer, open a video in Google Vids.
  2. In the menu, click Scene and then Templates or click Templates on the sidebar.
    • Tip: When you open a new video in Vids, the option to build a video from a template will appear in the welcome screen.
  3. Select the preferred template.
  4. A copy of the template opens in the side panel.
  5. To add all scenes from the template, click Insert all.
    • To add scenes individually, click the scene you want to add.

Change the background of your scene

A background is the picture or color behind your scene’s content. You can change the background color of one scene or all the scenes in a video.

  1. On your computer, open a video in Google Vids.
  2. Choose a scene by selecting the scene in the timeline at the bottom of your canvas.
  3. In the menu, click Scene and then Background or right-click on the canvas and then Background .
  4. Select a color:
    1. To add your own color, under "Custom," click Add Plus.
    2. You can select a hex code or manually adjust the color, hue, and transparency.
    3. Click OK.

Tip: To use an image as your background, right-click on an image in your canvas, then click Set image as background. Learn more about adding images to a Vid.

Change colors and fonts of your template

You can change the colors or fonts across your template using the "Styles" side panel.

  1. On your computer, open a video Google Vids.
  2. In the toolbar, click Styles or in the menu, select Scene and then Styles .
  3. In the "Styles" side panel, click on the color or text you want to update.
  4. Add your new color or font selection. The template applied across your video will automatically update.
Important: To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs you must exit Workspace Labs. If you exit, you will permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features, and you won’t be able to rejoin Workspace Labs. Learn more about how to exit Workspace Labs.
