Depending on your learning setting, there are different types of accounts for Classroom.
School account
You get a school account from an accredited school using Google Workspace for Education. Your school's IT administrator creates and manages these accounts and gives you your email and password. The account looks like [email protected]. If you use Classroom in a school and want to access Classroom from home, use your school account to sign in.
Note: Due to privacy laws, parents and guardians can't access Classroom or student assignments. They can get email summaries if the teacher allows it. For details, go to About guardian email summaries.
Personal Google Account
A personal Google Account is one that you create. You're likely to use it with Classroom outside of a school setting, such as a tutoring center or homeschool. It might look like [email protected].
When you use a personal account, you can't access the same Classroom features as other accounts,. With a personal account:
- Students can't email classmates.
- Teachers can't invite guardians to sign up for email summaries.
- Children who have an account managed by a parent can't create or teach classes.
Each country has its own minimum age requirement for creating a Google Account. Children who don't meet the minimum age requirements can have an adult create an account.
Google Workspace account
Important: Children aged 13 and under should only use Classroom with a Google Workspace for Education or Workspace for Nonprofits account.
A Google Workspace account is typically used in large organizations that run Workspace Basic, Business, Google Workspace for Education Plus, or Workspace for Nonprofits. Your organization's admin creates and manages these accounts and gives you your email address and password. The account looks like [email protected]. For more details, go to Choose your Google Workspace edition.

What are Drive storage limits for each account type?
Google Workspace storage is shared between Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Learn how storage use is calculated.
The amount of storage for each user depends on your Google Workspace edition. Most Google Workspace editions have pooled storage. Pooled storage is indicated in the following tables as total storage or a storage amount times the number of End User licenses.
Pooled storage is granted in stages:
- At the time of purchase, you get part of your storage.
- As you make timely payments for your subscription, your storage increases up to your total storage limit. It can take up to 72 hours after a payment for your storage to increase.
