Configure advanced Wi-Fi settings

The Wi-Fi page enables you to control advanced settings for your Wi-Fi network.

 CONFIGURE WI-FI

To configure advanced Wi-Fi settings:

  1. Sign into your GFiber account with your email and password.

  2. Click Network at the top-left corner.

  3. Click Edit Network.
The Network section of the GFiber customer portal, with the "Edit network" button circled in red.

  4. Click Edit next to Advanced network settings.
The Network Settings page of the GFiber portal, with the "Edit" link circled in red next to the Advanced network settings tile.

This will display your Wi-Fi settings:
The "Advanced Settings - Wi-Fi" screen within the GFiber portal. There are three tiles shown: Use a unique SSID per band; Broadcast Wi-Fi network name; and Security protocol.

2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi SSIDs

If you have a Mini Network Box, the 5 GHz Wi-Fi SSID option is unavailable, because the Mini Network Box has only a 2.4 GHz radio channel.

By default, your Wi-Fi network uses the network name you specify when you configure your Wi-Fi network for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. When wireless devices try to connect to Wi-Fi, they'll see only that one SSID.

If desired, you can assign a different network name (SSID) to the 5 GHz radio, so users can decide which frequency they want to use when connecting to your Wi-Fi network.

Before choosing advanced Wi-Fi options, you might want to compare wireless frequencies to see how they affect your wireless network.

To assign a different SSID to the 5 GHz radio:

  1. Click the toggle next to Use a unique SSID per band, and enter a network name for each frequency.
The "Use a unique SSID per band" tile in the GFiber portal. The 2.4 GHz network has the name "Asparagus2g," and the 5 GHz network has the name "Asparagus2g-5."

The SSID is case-sensitive and must be 1 to 32 characters long.

  2. Click Save. The new setting takes effect immediately. Now you can connect your devices to the new network.

If you assign different SSIDs to the different networks:

  • The password for the 5 GHz network is the same as the existing password for the 2.4 GHz network. You can't create different passwords for the two networks; if you change the password, it changes for both.

  • If wireless devices are connected to your network, those devices will disconnect when you click Save after changing the SSID.

  • By default, the network name you specified when you configured your Wi-Fi network will be given to the 2.4 GHz frequency, while the 5 GHz network name will be appended with "-5."

Broadcast Wi-Fi network name

The "Broadcast Wi-Fi network name" tile within the GFiber portal, with a toggle switch.

Broadcasting the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) causes the name of your network to appear in the list of available networks when a nearby wireless device is looking for a Wi-Fi connection. Network name broadcasting is enabled by default; however, you can disable SSID broadcasting on the Wi-Fi tab, if desired.

To enable or disable SSID broadcasting:

  1. Next to Broadcast Wi-Fi network name, click the toggle to change it from OFF to ON or vice versa.

  2. Click Save.

If you enable SSID broadcasting and have unique names for your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, wireless devices see both networks when they attempt to connect. The broadcast setting applies to both, whether you have one or two SSIDs.

Legacy mode (WPA/WPA2)

The "security protocol" tile in the GFiber customer portal. The option "WPA/WPA2 (Legacy)" is selected in the dropdown menu.

GFiber uses WPA2 encryption as the default for routers. If you have an older Wi-Fi client that requires WPA, you can use the legacy mode setting to support both WPA and WPA2 compatible devices.

Legacy mode may not be available for all routers.

To add legacy mode:

  1. Within the Security protocol dropdown menu, choose the "WPA/WPA2 (Legacy)" option.
  2. Click Save.
