Migrate Google Wifi to the Google Home app

Wifi devices and settings

After you add your Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app, the app will allow you to: 

• Manage your Google Wifi network
• Use Google Assistant to pause Wi-Fi, check your internet speed, and show your guest Wi-Fi password on Nest displays
• Add a Nest Wifi point to an existing Google Wifi network
• Add a Nest Wifi router as an add-on point to an existing Google Wifi network*

*In this case, it's recommended you instead follow the steps to add your Google Wifi device to a new Google Nest Wifi network.

Your devices, network settings, and information from your Google Wifi app will also be visible in the Google Home app.    

Only the owner of the Google Wifi network can migrate Google Wifi networks to the Google Home app. For "Import Google Wifi network" to appear, sign into the Google Home app with the same account that's used as the "Owner" in the Google Wifi app.

Additionally, if you originally set up your devices in the Home app or already have access to all your Google Wifi devices in the Home app, "Import Google Wifi network" won't appear and migration isn't needed.

Check what account is the owner:

1. Open the Google Wifi app .
2. Tap Menu , then select your Wifi network.
3. Tap the "Settings and actions" tab   Network & general  Managers.

Note: If you use multiple accounts with the Google Wifi app for different networks and can't find the network you're looking for, you might need to switch accounts in the Google Wifi app to find your network owner.

Only the Google Account associated with the "Owner" of the Google Wifi network can migrate Google Wifi networks to the Google Home app. If you don't want to use this account in the Google Home app and want to instead use a different Google Account to manage your home and Wi-Fi, you can temporarily use the owner's account found in the Wifi app to migrate your network then remove that account.

New to Google Home app

1. Open the Google Home app . 
2. Follow the prompts to set up a home. Make sure you use the Google Wifi network owner's account for setup. Check who the owner is in the Google Wifi app.
3. Follow the instructions above to add your Google Wifi network to the Google Home app.
4. Once migration is complete, invite the account you want to use to be a member of your home.
5. Have the owner of that account accept the invitation to join.
6. Remove the original Google Wifi app member from the home if desired.

Existing home in Google Home app

1. Open the Google Home app . 
2. Invite the Google Wifi owner's account to be a member of your home.
3. Have the owner of the account accept the invitation to join.
4. With the Google Wifi owner's account, add your Google Wifi network to the Google Home app.
5. After migration is complete, remove the member from the home if desired.

If you no longer have access to the Google Wifi owner's account and can't recover your account, you need to factory reset your devices in the Google Wifi app, then set up Google Wifi again in the Google Home app.

To confirm if your network needs to be migrated:

1. Open the Google Wifi app .
2. Tap Menu , then select your Wifi network. If your network isn't listed you might need to switch Google Accounts. If a network needs to be migrated it'll show "Migrate network" below the list of your networks. 
3. For online networks that need to be migrated, follow the instructions above to add your Google Wifi network to the Google Home app.

In some cases, you might have been notified by email or in the Google Wifi app to migrate a former network that's still in your Google Wifi app. If it's a network you no longer use, there's no need to migrate. If you'd like to stop migration notifications for these networks, you can remove your offline networks by using the Google Wifi app to factory reset your offline network.

If any of the following are true the "Migrate network" option won't appear in the Google Wifi app menu and migration isn't needed for that network:

• You originally set up your Google Wifi devices in the Google Home app.
• You already have access to all your Google Wifi devices in the Google Home app.
• You've previously migrated your network. 

If you tried to migrate from the Google Wifi app and got "You have no unmigrated networks," make sure you're logged into the Google Home app with the same account you use in the Google Wifi App. 

For first-time Google Home app users, before you migrate, you need to download the Google Home app and set up a home using the same Google Account you used in the Google Wifi app.

This can happen if the Wi-Fi network you're trying to migrate isn't online. If the Wi-Fi network you're trying to migrate is one you use regularly, make sure your Google Wifi is plugged in and connected to the internet. You can check the light on your Wifi device or find the device in the Google Wifi app to understand your current network status.

In some cases, a Wi-Fi network might be offline because it's one you don't use anymore. Check the Google Wifi app to confirm what network you currently use, and make sure to select that network when you follow the steps to add your network to the Google Home app.

If you're the owner of a friend or family member's Wi-Fi network in the Google Wifi app, you can either migrate their network to the Google Home app for them or transfer the control of that network to them in the Google Wifi app, so they can migrate the network themselves. 

Step 1. Set up a home in the Google Home app

If your friend or family member already uses the Google Home app and has a home set up, ask them to invite you to become a home member, then skip to Step 2.

Download the Google Home app if you haven't already, then follow the in-app steps to set up a new home. If you already use the Home app yourself, and need to create a new home for your friend or family member, learn how to create a home.

Step 2. Migrate the network from the Google Wifi app to the Google Home app

Follow the steps to migrate the Wi-Fi network to the Google Home app. Make sure to choose your friend or family member's home when asked what home to migrate the network to.

Step 3. Invite your friend or family member to join the home

If you created a new home in Step 1, you can now add your friend or family member to the home you created by inviting them. This will let them control their Wi-Fi network in the future, and if they have other compatible devices like speakers or smart lights, they can add them to the same home.

Your friend or family member will need to download the Google Home app on an Android or iOS mobile device to get started. Make sure they sign in to the Google Home app with the Google Account they'd like to use to control their Wi-Fi network in the future.

Step 4. Leave the home in the Google Home app (optional)

To continue to help your friend or family member manage their Wi-Fi network, you can remain a member of their home if they're comfortable with you doing so. However, keep in mind that home members in the Google Home app have full access to that home, including the ability to remove all other users, add new users, and change the settings of devices in that home. It's recommended to leave the home after you help migrate someone else's Wi-Fi network.
