Block or unblock an email address in Gmail

If you get unwanted emails, you can block the sender in Gmail. After you block the sender, all future emails from them go to Spam.

Block or unblock an email address

Important: If you get frequent promotional emails and newsletters in Gmail, you can unsubscribe from them. Learn how to unsubscribe.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. Open the message from the sender.
  3. At the top right, click More More.
  4. Click Block "{sender}" or Unblock "{sender}."

Prevent valid emails from going to Spam

After you unblock a sender, their emails should no longer be sent to Spam. If you still find their emails in Spam, try these steps.

Remove the email from Spam

After you remove the email, future emails from that sender won’t go to Spam.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. In the main menu on the left, click More and then Spam.
  3. Check the box next to the email that you want to remove.
  4. At the top, click Not spam.
Add the sender to your contacts

When you add the sender to Google Contacts, Gmail won’t send their messages to Spam.

  1. On your computer, go to Google Contacts.
  2. At the top left, click Create contact.
  3. Click Create a contact or Create multiple contacts.
  4. Enter the contact's information.
  5. Click Save.
Create a filter for your sender

You can create a filter for your sender so that their emails never go to Spam.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top, in the search bar, click Show search options photos tune.
  3. Next to “From,” enter the sender’s email address.
    • If you want to check that your search works correctly, click Search.
  4. At the bottom of the search window, click Create filter.
  5. Next to “Never send it to Spam,” check the box.
  6. Click Create filter.

Manage suspicious emails

Important: If someone uses Gmail to harass, intimidate, or threaten you, they're violating Gmail's Program Policies. If you feel that you're in danger, contact your local authorities right away, and ask whether any cyber harassment laws apply to your situation.
