Frequently asked questions
How does segmentation work?
Segmentation models help us recognize different physical characteristics such as hair, eyes, skin, or lips. In virtual try-on for AR Beauty, we use it to locate a person’s face or hair and to apply the right AR effect(s) to each.
How does rendering work?
Rendering works by overlaying digital content (such as a lipstick or foundation shade) onto a model image or someone’s video feed. The end result is a second image or video on top of the original one.
What's AR Beauty virtual try-on privacy policy?
The AR Beauty experience was built with privacy in mind. Google does not collect or store any biometric data during the AR Beauty experience. A person's video feed never leaves their device nor is it used for training purposes.
What factors can influence the virtual try-on experience?
Results will vary depending on the device type, internet connection, product being tried on, and lighting conditions of the video feed. For the best results, we recommend using the live try-on feature in well-lit environments with good internet connection. If that isn’t possible, our AR model images are always available as a substitute.
In addition, certain products and shades may have limitations in place from the manufacturer that impact the virtual try-on experience. For example, lighter hair color shades will not render well on darker hair, consistent with real world results. In these instances, Google will include a manufacturer disclaimer so that shoppers are aware that a product may not be recommended for their hair.
