Troubleshooting steps

Make sure you have the Meet app and Gmail app installed and they're updated.

People can initiate Meet calls from the Meet app, Gmail app, and Chat app. To ensure you don’t miss incoming calls:

Tip: Check that your apps are up to date.

When you open Meet for the first time, make sure you complete the registration steps:

  1. On the sign-in screen, select an account.
  2. Add and verify your phone number. If you skipped this step, learn how to do it now.
  3. Grant all permissions to ring. Learn more about permissions.

Check that Meet and Gmail have notification permissions turned on

Meet
  • Android:
    1. Open your phone or tablet.
    2. Tap Settings and then Apps and then Meet.
    3. Turn on Notifications.
  • iOS:
    • Ringing:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Settings and then Meet and then Notifications.
      3. Tap Allow Notifications and then Notification Delivery.
    • Microphone:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Settings and then Meet.
      3. Turn on Microphone.
    • Camera:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Settings and then Meet.
      3. Turn on Camera.
  • Web:
    • Chrome:
      1. Go to meet.google.com.
      2. At the top, click the icon left to the URL.
      3. Turn on Desktop notifications.
    • Firefox:
    • Safari:
      1. On your device, open Safari.
      2. On the homepage, click on Menu.
      3. Select Settings.
      4. Navigate to the websites tab.
      5. Select Notifications.
      6. Find meet.google.com and select Allow.
Gmail
  • Android:
    • Enable notifications:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Settings and then Apps and then Gmail.
      3. Turn on Notifications.
    • Enable Chat:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Gmail and then Settings and then Chat.
      3. Tap Show the chat tab.
    • Enable Rings:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Gmail and then Settings and then Meet.
      3. Tap Call ringing.
  • iOS:
    • Enable Chat:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Gmail and then Settings and then Chat.
      3. Turn on Chat.
    • Enable Rings:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Gmail and then Settings.
      3. Turn on Ringing for incoming calls.
    • Microphone:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Settings and then Gmail.
      3. Turn on Microphone.
    • Camera:
      1. Open your phone or tablet.
      2. Tap Settings and then Meet.
      3. Turn on Camera.
  • Web:

Check your device settings

Check that your device is on with internet access, but these settings are off:

  • Do not disturb mode
  • Focus mode
  • Airplane mode

Check that you have a phone number associated with Meet

  1. Open the Meet app .
  2. Tap your Google Account profile picture.
  3. Ensure there's a phone number listed at the bottom of the menu.
  4. If not, tap Add Phone Number.

Tip: It may take up to 24 hours to sync a newly added phone number. If you did it in the last 24 hours, wait and come back.

Check that your device has a legacy calling account with the correct email and phone number

  1. Open the Google Meet app .
  2. Tap your Google Account profile picture.
  3. Tap the account with which you want to make legacy calls.
  4. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings.
    • If “Calling settings (Legacy)” is listed, that’s the account you've associated with calling.

Ensure your phone number is reachable

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com/phone.
  2. Make sure there’s a phone number and when you tap it, Better Sharing on Google is turned on.
    • If it’s off, you must verify your phone number to turn it on.
  3. At the bottom, make sure Meet is listed as an app with your phone number. If not, add your phone number to Meet:
    1. On your mobile device, tap your Google Account profile picture.
    2. Tap Add your phone number.
    3. Tap the phone number you want to use to make and receive Meet calls with, or add a new number.
    4. Tap Continue.
    5. If your number is:
      • Associated with a Google Account, it’s automatically verified.
      • Not associated with a Google Account, Google Meet texts a code to the number you entered. Carrier text message rates may apply.
    6. Enter the code you received.

Important:

  • If you have multiple phone numbers:
    1. Go to myaccount.google.com/phone.
    2. Make sure “Better Sharing” is on for the phone number you want users to call.
    3. Turn off Better Sharing for all other numbers.

Ensure that account registration and the app is active

For Android users, open the Meet app to ensure your app hasn’t been disabled and your account registrations are active.

Tip:

  • Apps can get disabled if they aren’t used at least once every 90 days. To check if you have any disabled apps, on your device, tap Settings and then Unused Apps.
  • Learn how to manage unused apps.

Check your settings for who can contact you

In the Meet app:

  1. Open the Google Meet app .
  2. Tap Menu and then Settings and then General.
  3. Tap Only contacts can call me.
    • If this is turned on, make sure the person calling you is a contact with a saved phone number or email added.

In the Gmail app:

  1. Tap Menu and then Settings and then Chat.
  2. Turn on Show the chat tab.
  3. Tap Menu and then Settings.
  4. Turn on Ring for Incoming Calls.

Check that the user you want to receive calls from isn't on your Blocked users list.

On Android:

  1. Open the Google Meet app .
  2. Tap Menu and then Settings and then Blocked Users.
  3. Next to the account or phone number you want to unblock, tap .

On iOS:

  1. Open the Google Meet app .
  2. Tap Menu and then Settings and then Account and then Blocked Users.
  3. Next to the account or phone number you want to unblock, tap .

Important: If the person who calls you has their Google Account disabled, their incoming call is blocked as perceived spam. The person trying to reach you can learn more about disabled accounts and how to restore them.

Child account settings

Child accounts can only receive calls from contacts who have their email. Learn more about Child Accounts.

Check Admin settings for Business and EDU users

By default, users can only receive Meet calls from contacts and other users in their organization. To let others receive 1:1 video calls from outside your domain, admins use admin control.

Your admin also controls Legacy calling functionality through the Legacy Services Switch.

Frequently asked questions

Why did one of my devices ring, but not the other?

The new Meet calling experience is still rolling out and it's possible that only one of your devices received the update. If you have multiple devices, and one has the unified calling update but the other device is still only legacy calling, your device with Legacy calling won’t ring when someone rings you through a unified Meet call.

After your second device receives the update, both of your devices will receive the call. You'll know when the update is available for your second device if you open Meet, tap on your Google Account profile picture, and look for “Add or Change Phone number” in the drop down list.

Why did my Gmail app ring but not my Meet app?

Calls from some Workspace apps such as Gmail will only ring Gmail. Make sure you install Gmail, provide necessary permissions, and turn on Allow incoming ring, and the chat tab.

Why didn’t the ring go through on a call in Chat or Gmail?

Calls started in Chat or Gmail ring users who have Chat or Gmail installed, notifications turned on, and the ability to receive Meet calls on. Currently, Chat and Gmail calls don’t ring Meet directly.

Why am I not receiving notifications through Chat?

You’ll only receive calls made through Gmail in Gmail, Chat doesn’t support calling notifications even when you’re using Chat in Gmail.

Will Meet calls ring on my computer?
  • Web users aren’t immediately eligible for new Meet calling. As it supports legacy calls, someone may be trying to reach you on new Meet calling but you won’t receive the ring at meet.google.com.
  • Instead, use your mobile device to receive and answer these calls.
Missed call notifications aren't received on my device?

This could be due to your device being off or disconnected. In the future, you can find missed call notifications, even if your device is off or disconnected.

Why are my calls to my child not going through?

To protect children, under-age personal accounts automatically only receive calls from contacts. Make sure you’re a contact of your child at contacts.google.com.

My child’s account doesn’t receive calls

Your child’s account was previously not considered an under-age account but now is. As a result, we restrict children to only receiving calls from contacts. Make sure you’re a contact of your child at contacts.google.com.

I signed into my Nest, but it isn’t ringing

Newly-registered Nest devices may take up to 48 hours to receive incoming legacy calls, made from a mobile device or other Nest devices. It can automatically make outgoing calls. Nest devices currently don't support new Meet calling or receive calls initiated from the web.

Will my Nest device receive Meet calling?

Nest devices currently don’t support Meet calling. Learn how to make a call on your Google Nest speaker or display.

Why can’t I access the latest Meet calling on my Nest device?

Nest devices currently only support legacy calls. If you use your Nest device for legacy calls, you won’t be able to receive the Meet calling update on your mobile device. You can continue to receive Legacy calls on your Nest devices and remain in the legacy experience on mobile.
