Why can't others hear me on my Pixel phone?

Others can't hear me on phone calls

To fix your speaker problems, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that you're not muted.
    • While on a call, look at your phone. Check if the microphone  is highlighted or not. If it’s highlighted, tap it to unmute.
  2. Turn off Bluetooth. Learn how to turn off Bluetooth.
  3. Close all your apps. Learn how to close apps.
  4. Restart your phone.
    • Press your phone's Power button. On the screen, tap Restart Restart.
    • You can also press and hold your phone's Power button for about 30 seconds.
  5. Check your phone accessories.
    • If you have a screen protector or case, remove it. We recommend that you use a phone case made for Pixel, like those on the Google Store.
    • If you’re using audio accessories like headphones, try a different accessory.
  6. Check your phone hardware.
  7. Update your phone to the latest Android version. Learn how to check your Android version.
  8. Check your microphones.
    • To record, use the Recorder app Recorder app. If you hear your recording, your bottom microphone works.
    • To record a video with sound, use your Camera Google Camera. If you hear sound in the video, your top microphone works.
    • If one of your microphones doesn't work, learn how to get help with your Pixel phone.

'Liquid or debris in USB port' message

If this message opens, follow these steps.

Others can't hear me on app calls, like Meet or Skype
  1. Make sure that you're not muted.
    • While on a call, look at your phone. Check if the microphone icon is highlighted or not. If it’s highlighted, tap it to unmute.
  2. Turn off Bluetooth. Learn how to turn off Bluetooth.
  3. Close all your apps. Learn how to close apps.
  4. Restart your phone.
    • On Pixel 5a and earlier: Press your phone's Power button for about 30 seconds or until your phone restarts.
    • On Pixel 6 and later, including Fold: Press and hold the Power and Volume up buttons for a few seconds.
  5. Tap Restart Restart.
  6. Check that your apps are up to date. Learn how to update an app.
  7. Update your phone to the latest Android version. Learn how to check your Android version.
  8. If you use a specific app, like a video messaging app, check that the app has permission to use your microphone. Learn how to change app permissions.
  9. Remove and reinstall the app. Learn how to remove apps or reinstall apps on your phone.
There's too much background noise

Important: This feature depends on your call bandwidth and may not be available for all calls.

You can reduce background noise in a call with clear calling. This feature is available on Pixel 7 and later, including Fold.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound and vibration and then Clear calling.
  3. Turn Use clear calling on or off.

Advanced troubleshooting
