Transfer ownership of a class

This article is for teachers.

You can transfer ownership of a class to a co-teacher to make them the primary teacher.

  • Until the co-teacher accepts the transfer, you still own the class.
  • After the transfer, you become a co-teacher of the class.
  • Only the primary teacher can delete the class.

Note: If your primary teacher account is deleted before you transfer ownership of your classes, some class features won't work.

Who can you transfer ownership to?

  • If you use Classroom with a Google Workspace or Google Workspace for Education account—You can only transfer ownership to a co-teacher in your domain.
  • If you use Classroom with a personal Google Account—You can only transfer ownership to a co-teacher who uses Classroom with a personal Google Account.

Who owns class materials after a transfer?

After you transfer class ownership, the new primary teacher owns:

  • The class Google Drive folder
  • Materials in the class templates folder
  • Turned-in student work

Who owns deleted materials?

If you have a Google Workspace for Education account and you deleted files before the ownership transfer, you remain the owner of the deleted files. Learn more about making someone else the owner of your files.

Transfer class ownership

When you transfer ownership of your class, you can't undo the transfer.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the class and then People.
  3. Next to the teacher's name, click More and then Make class owner.
  4. Click Invite.

You get a confirmation email when the transfer finishes.

Cancel an invitation to transfer a class

If the co-teacher hasn’t accepted your invitation, you can cancel the invitation to transfer ownership.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the class that you invited a co-teacher to own.
  3. At the top, click People.
  4. Next to the teacher's name, click More and then Revoke invite to own.

Accept or decline ownership of a class

You get an email when a teacher invites you to take ownership of a class.

  1. In the invitation email, click Respond.
  2. Click Accept or Decline.

Note: If you accept, you and the original owner get confirmation emails when the transfer finishes.
