Perform a Google Fiber Self-Installation with a Network Box

If you’re eligible for self-install at your current address, you can either select this option during sign-up or you’ll get an invitation from us to sign up for self-install.

¿Hablas español? You can download or print this self-installation booklet in Spanish to better help you in setting up your Google Fiber Internet.

Below you’ll find a video and a step-by-step guide to installing Google Fiber internet yourself using one of our self-install kits.

If you've already self-installed Google Fiber at your current address and you're moving to another residence within the same city where you’re still eligible to get one of our internet plans, you can take your existing equipment to your new home and install it there. However, if you are moving to a different city where you will still be eligible for Google Fiber, you will need to cancel your plan and sign up for a new one.

If you live in a multi-family dwelling unit (MDU) in Orange County, your self-install process is slightly different. Please follow these instructions instead to guide you through your self-install.

Watch this video or follow the step-by-step instructions below to set up your internet service with your self-install kit.

Step 1: Locate your Fiber Jack

Our installation specialist has already installed a Fiber Jack on your wall. That's where the internet signal enters your home.

  1. Find the Fiber Jack installed on your wall. (It might be in a closet, behind a couch, in the garage, or in another out-of-the-way place.)  If you need more help finding your Fiber Jack, visit this page.

Step 2: Connect the Fiber Jack to the Network Box

Use the ethernet cable provided to connect the Fiber Jack to the corresponding port on the Network Box. If the port has a black cap in it, remove and discard the cap. The light on the Fiber Jack should be red for up to 15 minutes before turning blue.

Note: Use the Power over Ethernet instructions below to powercycle the Fiber Jack:

Troubleshooting tip: If the light on the Fiber Jack doesn't turn blue after 15 minutes, reboot your Fiber Jack in one of the following ways based on the type of Fiber Jack you have.

To reset the Fiber Jack (power over ethernet):

  1. If an AC Adapter is connected, unplug the power source from the wall.
    • If it's easier to unplug the power cable from the Fiber Jack itself, carefully remove the power cable from the unit.
  2. Unplug the Ethernet cord from the device to which the Fiber Jack is connected, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
    • If it's easier to unplug the Ethernet cord from the Fiber Jack itself, carefully remove the Ethernet cord from the unit, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  3. Reconnect the AC Adapter if it was disconnected.
  4. Wait three minutes for the Fiber Jack to fully reboot and reconnect to the network.
Step 3: Connect the Network Box to a power outlet

Plug in and connect the Network Box power cord.

The light on the front is red at first and blinks for up to 15 minutes before turning solid blue. Once you see the solid blue light, your Google Fiber service is connected and working!

If the light on the Network Box is not solid blue after 15 minutes, unplug the power cord from the outlet, wait at least 10 seconds, and then plug it back in. If the Network Box light still doesn't turn solid blue after another 15 minutes, please contact Google Fiber customer support.

Step 4: Connect to your Google Fiber Setup Wi-Fi network

Your Network Box creates a Wi-Fi network you'll use to complete your installation. For this step, you can use any device with Wi-Fi, such as a laptop, phone or tablet.

Connect your device to your Google Fiber Setup Wi-Fi network. Your setup network name looks like one of the following examples:

If your address is: Your setup network name is:
123 East 68th Street GFiberSetup123
789 K Street, Apt. 5 GFiberSetup5

Can't find the network name? You can also edit Wi-Fi settings in the network section of your Fiber account.

Step 5: Create your private Wi-Fi network
  1. Open a web browser or a new browser tab to be taken to our Google Fiber welcome screen. If you're not automatically redirected, visit wifisetup.googlefiber.net.

  2. Follow the on-screen steps to verify your Google Fiber account and set up your private Wi-Fi network. You'll be asked to create a new wireless network name (SSID). The SSID is case-sensitive and must be 1 to 32 characters long.

Next, split your network to assign different devices to the 5 GHz radio. Users can decide which frequency they want to use when connecting to your Wi-Fi network and will prevent Internet speeds to slow or be interrupted by other devices.

  3. Create your Wi-Fi password. Your Wi-Fi password is case-sensitive and should be between 8 and 63 characters. Like the wireless network name (SSID), if your password is outside of this character limit, or if there is an accidental space at the beginning or end, you may have connection issues.

  4. Take a note of your Wi-Fi network name and password.

  5. Disconnect from GFiberSetup and sign in to your new Wi-Fi network.

  6. After you've created your private Wi-Fi network, you can connect your other devices. Just go to the network settings on your devices and use your new network name and password to connect.

You're done! You can always change your Wi-Fi password or manage your network settings in your Google Fiber account.

If you've completed Steps 1 through 5 to set up your Fiber network and have received a Fiber Phone Self-Installation Kit, you're ready to install Fiber Phone service.

Common issues during self-installation

  • What should I do if my internet speed is slow or is interrupted? If after you've created your Wi-Fi network and are having issues with slow speeds or connection, you can split your network bands which allows you to connect to different frequencies and reduce interference with other devices while improving your connection.

  • What if I can't locate my Fiber Jack? Watch this video to learn more about how to look for your Fiber Jack. The Fiber Jack is normally in the living room on the same wall near where your TV is located. In homes where your Fiber Jack is installed someplace other than your main living space, it may be in a closet or media panel, behind a couch, in the garage, or in another out-of-the-way place. Go here to learn more about your Fiber Jack.

  • What if my Fiber Jack is damaged? Do not try to open, modify or repair your Fiber Jack. This could cause electric shock or injury to you.

  • What do the blinking lights on my GFiber devices mean? The LEDs on the front of the GFiber device indicate its status. If you're having trouble with your device, you can use the detailed information to diagnose the issue based on how the LEDs look.
If you're still having trouble with your network, you can use our internet troubleshooter or contact GFiber customer support to help resolve your issue.
