Important: Legacy calls, previously known as Duo, upgrade to Meet calls that have expanded features like Live Captions, in-call chat, stackable effects, cloud encryption, screen sharing and more.
As users move over to Meet calling, some legacy Duo calling features are being upgraded. A few features, like Family Mode, Moments and Knock Knock, are no longer available.
Meet calling has already rolled out to Business and EDU users. In the next few months, it'll roll out to users with personal accounts. To use the new calling experience as soon as it's available for you, keep your Meet app up to date.
When all parties in the call use the latest version of Meet with the update, an in-app prompt explains that they are now using the new calling experience. Otherwise, the call defaults to the legacy calling experience. Once all users have the updated Meet app, legacy calling is no longer accessible.

- Business and EDU users: You can make 1:1 cloud-encrypted video calls and ring someone's Workspace account or phone number.
- Users with personal accounts: You can ring other accounts or phone numbers once you and the person who you're calling receive the update. In the meantime, you can continue to make Meet legacy calls.
- For meetings: Start or schedule a Google Meet video meeting.
In addition to Meet access controls, admins can also restrict who can make Meet calls to their users.
If you want to set call restrictions for users in your organisation to prevent them from receiving calls:
- (Default) Users receive calls only from contacts and other users in the organisation.
- Users can receive calls from anyone.
- Users can't receive calls.
If you want to restrict users in your organisation from placing calls, the following options are available:
- Turn off Meet's call creation ability to prevent your users from placing calls and starting meetings, but they can continue to receive calls or join meetings created by others.
- Mobile device management (MDM) to turn off calling with Google Meet for devices deployed to your organisation.
Note: These settings affect only Google Meet calling, not legacy calling or calling in Google Chat. These settings also do not affect the ability to join meetings. Restrictions set in Access can further limit the calls that users can receive. Learn more about how to turn off legacy calling.
Important:
- As we roll out new Meet calling on the web, not all users are immediately eligible. To access legacy calling at any time, you can call from your mobile device or go to meet.google.com/calling.
- After the roll-out is complete, you can place calls at meet.google.com.
Start a video call
- On your computer, sign in to Google Meet.
- On the left, click Calls
.
- Search for a contact or enter an email.
- Click Video call.
Tips:
- The new experience might not pull up contacts that were in legacy calling on meet.google.com/calling.
- Contacts available for Meet calls are sourced from the Google Contacts. Local device contacts are only visible on the web for Android users who toggle on Save contact info from your signed-in devices at myactivity.google.com/devicecontacts. Learn more about contacts available for Meet calls.
- If the contact that you want to reach can't receive calls, share a Meet link instead.

Start now.Get incoming call notifications
To get an incoming call notification on your computer, you must:
- Have a Meet tab open in your browser.
- Sign in to Meet.
- Turn on Meet notifications.
If someone places a legacy call to you, you get an incoming call notification only if you're signed in to meet.google.com/calling and have it open in a browser.
Block or report someone
Important: You can 'Block' or 'Report abuse and block' a call.
- On your computer, sign in to Google Meet.
- Go to the 'Calls' tab.
- In the search bar, enter the name that you want to block.
- Select the user's name.
- At the top right, click Contact options
Tip: If you block someone, they can't call you directly on Meet. You can interact with them if you're in a meeting or group call with them.
Unblock someone
- On your computer, sign in to Google Meet.
- Go to the 'Calls' tab.
- Click Settings

- Under 'Block people', click See who's blocked.
- Next to the person who you want to unblock, click Unblock
