Product linking: Link Google Marketing Platform and Google Ads

Google Marketing Platform (GMP) brings together a suite of tools that allow business owners to manage their marketing and analytics in one place. Adding your Google Ads account to your GMP organisation makes it convenient to see how your Google Ads campaign performance tracks against other data in your marketing strategy.

Before you begin

You can link these types of Google Ads accounts to a Google Marketing Platform organisation:

To link and unlink the Google Ads accounts and organisations, you’ll need to have admin access or above on the Google Ads account and member access or above on the GMP organisation.

Bear in mind:
  • When you link your Google Ads account to a GMP organisation, the GMP organisation will appear in Google Ads as a manager account under “Account access” in the “Managers” tab. However, you won’t be able to access the GMP manager account the same way that you would a normal manager account.
  • Once you have linked your Google Ads account to a GMP organisation, you’ll no longer be able to link your Google Ads account to a manager account. You’ll have to unlink your Google Ads account from GMP before you can link it to a manager.
  • The GMP organisation linked to your Google Ads account automatically has administrative ownership over your account. The permissions level for a GMP manager can’t be downgraded except by unlinking the Google Ads account from the GMP organisation.

How it works

Linking your Google Ads account will allow organisation admins to:

  • Create a user audit report to view user access across GMP accounts and Google Ads accounts
  • Remove users from linked Google Ads accounts in GMP Home
  • View all Google Ads and GMP accounts associated with the organisation in one place

User management

Once your Google Ads account is linked to a Google Marketing Platform organisation, a Google Marketing Platform user admin can view user access across GMP accounts and Google Ads accounts in one place. The GMP admin can also revoke user access to Google Ads accounts from the platform's 'User Management' pages. This means that GMP user admins can now revoke user access to GMP accounts and Google Ads accounts in one place without needing to log in to each platform separately.

Bear in mind, though, that the user admin won't be able to add any users to the Google Ads accounts. You can learn more about adding and removing users from the Google Marketing Platform here.

Instructions

Follow instructions here to learn how to link, unlink, and move Google Ads accounts to different organisations.

After you link a Google Ads account to your organisation, Google Ads appears in your products list. In the products list, click Google Ads to see the individual accounts. When you link a Google Ads account to your organisation, users on that account are added to your organisation with the role of User. When organisation users have access to Google Ads accounts, the Google Ads icon appears next to their names.

In Google Ads, the linked GMP organisation will appear in Google Ads as a manager account with administrative ownership. You’ll see the GMP organisation under 'Account access' in the 'Managers' tab and, if your Google Ads account is a manager account, you’ll see the GMP organisation in the 'Accounts table'. However, you won’t be able to access the GMP manager account in Google Ads as you would a normal manager account, and the GMP manager account won’t appear in the account selector.

Unlinking your Google Ads account

To unlink any product account, including Google Ads, from a GMP organisation, you need to be an admin for that product account. You can find instructions for unlinking your Google Ads account from within GMP Home here.

The GMP organisation linked to your Google Ads account automatically has administrative ownership over your account. The permissions level for a GMP manager cannot be downgraded except by unlinking the Google Ads account from the GMP organisation.

You can also unlink your Google Ads account from the GMP organisation from within the Google Ads platform.

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Admin icon Admin icon.
  2. Click Linked accounts.
  3. Under 'Your linked accounts and products', find 'Google Marketing Platform', then click Manage and link.
  4. Locate the account that you want to unlink, and click Unlink.
